High Maneuverability

The rider leans to either side on the Airboard to shift body-weight: this in turn makes the Airboard turn at any angle, including a spin. click here

What is the Airboard?

Start it up, hop on, adjust the throttle and off you go! Australia's Arbortech, Inc. debuted the Airboard in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and it makes quite an impression! The Airboard carries a single passenger on a cushion of air, like a hovercraft, only smaller.

The Airboard has a diameter of 6-feet, but the deck-height is only 1-foot off the ground, making it a unique approach to personal transportation. It can carry up to 220-pounds, and has a maximum-speed of 15 mph (25 kph). In essence, the Airboard is everything that the Segway should have been -- including being steered by shifting the rider's weight.

The Airboard in Action

The Airboard is a perfect example of incremental advances in known aerospace technology. It relies on high-power fans driven by a mini-turbo internal-combustion powerplant for both air-cushion levitation and forward thrust. These characteristics put the device squarely in the realm of aero-mechanical engineering, but it nonetheless shines as a wondeful example of tackling the tough engineering challenges associated with existing technologies.
