Ring
Projectile - The Mass-Driver 4.5-inch diameter 'ring'
projectile, which is utilized to ride a wave of magneto- inductive
current down the 2-foot barrel of the device. The ring is
not a required shape, and conventional projectiles have also
been successfully tested.
The
Military - Previous attempts by the US Government to create
lighweight EM-weapons have failed because they were attempting
to fire heavy projectiles such as tank-shells.
Unfortunately, the efficiency of EM-weapons decreases with
the square of the projectile weight, which means that while
heavy projectiles are nearly impossible to accelerate, lightweight
projectiles offer better acceleration than normal bullets.

Accelerator & Target Photos |
The
Mass-Driver is a 2nd-generation electromagnetic accelerator
developed by Information Unlimited in Amherst, NH. It's capable
of putting a 4.5 inch (1/4 pound) projectile through 1-inch
thick wood with projectile speeds exceeding 300-feet per second.
It packs a whopping 3000+ joules of energy into an ultrashort
pulse -- accelerating the projectile from 0 to 204 mph in
milliseconds. click

How Does It Work? |
Mass-Driver
technology is based on Lenz-Law inductive-repulsion, rather
than the more traditional Lorentz-force used in traditional
railgun designs. Instead of passing current through a rail-system,
the current is pulsed through an accelerator coil, which in
turn creates an opposing magnetic field in the disk-shaped
projectile.
The capacitor shown above is used to create a 3,000 joule
pulse that instantly accelerates the projectile-rings to high-velocities
in excess of 300 feet-per-second.
The
projectiles weight 3.7 ounces each, and measure 4.5 inches
in diameter at 1/8 inch in thickness. At maximum velocities,
they've been tested to penetrate wood, drywall, particle-board,
and light-metals.
Keep in mind that while the Mass-Driver is fully-functional,
its still definitely in the prototype stages -- it functions
great in a lab or other carefully controlled environment,
but can be highly-dangerous if not used in accordance with
safety precautions.
